The wreck diving capital of the world

Truk Lagoon

With 61 wrecks tightly packed into a beautiful coral reef lagoon, Truk Lagoon is a mecca for wreck divers.

During WWII, the Japanese Imperial Navy used Truk as one of their main staging points for attacks on the allied forces in the Pacific. But that all changed in 1944 when the American-led “Operation Hailstone” surprised the fleet at anchor. The action resulted in the plethora of dive sites which we can see there today.

Many historical artifacts, from medicine bottles to engines, along with articles of war, which include aircraft wings for Zero Fighter planes, tanks, guns, gas masks, and ammunition, can still be found at many of the sites. Whilst the wrecks themselves are encrusted with corals, you can still clearly see telegraphs, steering columns, and mounted guns.

There is no shortage of wrecks to fill your time in Chuuk. Even just exploring the wrecks as reefs, from the outside, can easily fill an entire trip. But there is also the opportunity to explore engine rooms and holds to really see history come alive.

History has never been more colourful or alive. Truk Lagoon is also an underwater paradise for technical divers. With some wrecks beyond the reach of recreational limits our onboard facilities and dive crew allow us to mix our groups to suit everyone’s needs.

If you fancy a change of scenery, the wrecks in Truk Lagoon are surrounded by flourishing coral reefs. Check out the excellent coral pinnacles and explore the deep channels with schooling pelagic fish.
