The ultimate bucket-list dive destination

Galapagos Islands

A destination that genuinely needs no introduction.

Experienced divers often regard the Galapagos Islands as something of a highlight in their diving career. No doubt they are one of the most spectacular pelagic diving destinations on the planet, one of those rare places where you can dive through hundreds of hammerhead sharks to find a whale shark cruising along. Add silky sharks, sea turtles, giant morays, and schooling fish in their thousands into the mix...just another diving day in the Galapagos Archipelago.

At Wolf Island and Darwin Island, to the north, you can expect to see Galapagos sharks and eagle rays up close cruising in the currents, whilst dives at Cabo Marshall can put you face to face with oceanic manta rays or in the midst of a school of thousands of black-striped salemas. Back on the main islands, Mola mola (Sunfish) can be seen in the ‘ice box’ on Isabela, sometimes even in groups. And we haven't even mentioned the penguins and marine iguanas.

Macro life is plentiful with black coral bushes sheltering seahorses, blennies, nudibranchs, hawkfish, and frogfish. But then there are things that really push diving to another level, like the red-lipped bat fish This is only a taste of why divers consistently state that the Galapagos have the healthiest marine life on the planet.

Situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, nearly 1,400 km due west from the coast of Ecuador, the archipelago’s unique flora and fauna is mainly due to the isolated location. The three distinct ocean currents around the islands bring with them nutrients and these nutrients bring in marine life of all kinds and sizes.

Above water, this isolated group of volcanic islands has a striking range of landscapes which are home to an unparalleled number of endemic species. Brought to prominence by Charles Darwin in his renowned book ‘On the Origin of Species’ following his 1835 visit on board HMS Beagle, the islands were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

Their vastness is surprising, but the fact that they are still being shaped by volcanic activity is amazing. The wildlife is just beyond wonders; plants, birds, and animals do not seem to have changed much since ancient times. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this place seems frozen in time and to visit the Galapagos is truly a chance of a lifetime.
